The Cross Country World Championships in Cairns, Australia, of course, were the highlight of the season, an event that Franziska Koch, Leonie and Antonia Daubermann of STEVENS MTB Racing Team [Link] already had qualified for early in the season. Leonie and Antonia Daubermann were part of a fight for the Bronze Medal in the U19 Juniors’ race – but eventually they weren’t lucky.

Positioned in a safe third place Leonie crashed heavily and eventually finished - regarding the severity of the crash - a still very good 10th. Franziska on the other hand had to work her way from way back to the front of the race; so her fifth place does not reflect her huge effort during the race.

In the Women’s U23 race, Antonia Daubermann was held back by a crash – when she finally had room to move, she went full throttle to come in 14th in the end.

Prior to this event, at the European Championships in Darfo Bario, Italy, STEVENS MTB Racing Team had been one of the strongest contingents of German Cycling Federation’s team selection.

'Never Stop' for David Horvath
David Horvath had focussed on the Eliminator Sprint after fracturing his fibula at the beginning of the season. So after a couple of good international results he was qualified to enter this discipline at the European Championships. Here he showed that in the Sprint he has arrived at the top. Up until the final run he advanced with ”almost no effort”. In the finale, though, he crashed shortly after the start. Yet, David was not about giving up. Despite several injuries he just ran the one kilometre course ahead of him because he was not ready to accept a ”DNF” in his record - perfect ”never stop” attidude!

Franziska Koch, who already had qualified for the Euros early in the season, was nominated for the relay race. With her relay team she missed to win a medal by a very narrow margin. And in her U19 race she, being one of the younger riders in the U19 field, reached a respectable sixth place. Leonie Daubermann at the time still had to deal with an injury she had suffered in the German Championship race in Bad Salzdetfurth.

One Gold and Two Silvers In The German Championships
In the German Championship race in Bad Salzdetfurth it looked good for her at first when she suddenly crashed. Therefore she was not able to defend her German Champion title – the first time in four years. So her team mate Franziska Koch had a free run and won her first championship in her first year in the U19 category. Antonia Daubermann rode a good race in the U23 class and finished second to win Silver.

The first of three medals for STEVENS Racing Team and the Sonora SL was won on Friday by David Horvath. Despite losing the sprint on the final meters to finish second and being a little disappointed, he eventually was quite pleased with the result.

Veronika Brüchle then won the fourth German Championship medal in the Enduro race. She defended her Bronze medal from the previous year in Willingen. Later in the year she also won the overall in the French Cannondale Enduro Series.

Also the team had lots of fun but also success in local and notable marathon races. The mixed team with Antonia Daubermann, team manager Joachim Oechsner and brothers Jochen and Steffen Weisenseel went on to win the inofficial 12-hour championships in Penzberg, Bavaria by a great margin after 300km (186mls) and 4,000m (13,000ft) of climbing. For this achievement the quartet received the Team of the Year award by the City of Regensburg.

For marathon riders Steffen und Jochen Weisenseel the highlight of the season took place at the end of the year: The Brazil Ride one of the biggest stage races in the Americas. After seven stages the brothers riding their STEVENS Jura Carbon ES bikes finished in the 20s.

Hadn’t they suffered a few mechanicals, a better result might have been possible, yet this should not diminish the great experience: ”The Brazil Ride is an absolute must for any passionate mountain biker. The race is perfectly organized with sensational vistas and wonderful trails.” This race also concluded the two brothers’ racing career.

Steffen and Jochen Weisenseel and also David Ng will retire from the team for occupational reasons. STEVENS Vertriebs GmbH wishes to thank Steffen, Jochen and David for their dedication on and off the race track and especially Jochen for the social media support.

Planning for the upcoming season is almost done – with one returnee and several youth riders. Christian Pfäffle after one year will return to the STEVENS Racing Team that he won a Bronze Medal at the 2016 German Championships with. In an interview with he said: ”For me it’s the optimal solution. Last year has shown that we can be successful together. I know that it can work out.”

Besides Franziska Koch who won the German U19 Cross Country Championships as well as events on the road and on the track in the omnium, Emma Eydt will compete in U19 races. She will join the team together with her twin brother Markus. Another addition will be Luisa Daubermann, the youngest of the Daubermann sisters, who is runner-up U17 German Champion. In the U23 category David Horvath will be joined by Alex Bregenzer and in 2018 Christian Pfäffle will proudly display the red-white jersey in the Elite field together with Primin Eisenbarth. Wait for further infos coming up in February.
