Technology

STEVENS S-Lite Aluminium Fork

S-Lite Aluminium Fork

This is what modern rigid forks look like: The straight fork legs and fork crown are made in one piece - this reduced the number of welds and guarantees highest stiffness and steering precision. Full-size mudguards and a low-rider pannier rack can be attached just as easily as an elegant head light bracket. The QR-15 thru axle version can additionally be made more safe against theft with the optional Pitlock system. And still the STEVENS S-Lite aluminium forks lives up to its name when put on a scale.

Belt Drive

A belt drive, as the name suggests, uses a drive belt instead of a chain to transfer power from the cranks to the rear wheel. Since the belt cannot be split like a chain the special STEVENS frame utilizes a splittable seat stay, but the advantages are convincing: lower weight, silent operation, almost endless longevity without any maintenance.

QR15 Front Thru-Axle

"15" stands for the diameter in millimeters, "QR" for quick release. Combined they are the most useful method to fix the front wheel to the (suspension) fork. With convincing advantages: high stiffness, precise positioning of the brake disc and super-easy handling. So STEVENS specs almost all its mountain bikes and even high-quality trekking bikes, cross bikes and pedelecs with a thru-axle. Additionally, especially with 29" MTBs axle spacing is increased from 100 to 110 mm which makes the design even stiffer.

Pitlock Thru-Axle Lock Available

Thru-axles provide more lateral stiffness and eliminate the risk of the front wheel shifting inside the fork. This way brake disc and axle always fit precisely without rubbing. For STEVENS bikes with a K1 rigid fork there is a thru-axle lock from Pitlock available as an option, including a 15-mm thru-axle made from aluminium, adaptor, PIT-key and code card. for more info see www.pitlock.de – Product "Set 19 thru axle 15mm for Stevens".

Hydraulic Disc Brakes (Trekking)

There is no more reliable brake system than hydraulic disc brakes - that is why we strongly advice everyone, who is riding their cross, trekking- or city bike 12 months a year to choose one of our models with the „DISC“ suffix. Brake power is easy to modulate and does not fade a bit in the wet. Also the brakes are almost maintenance-free. And your local STEVENS dealer will gladly explain to you what you need to take care of when removing and re-installing a wheel

Even when you can't see the strut that connects the pannier rack to the fender - it is there. The strut runs below the fender and provides - in connection with the rack mounted to the fender - more stability and lateral stiffness.

Tapered Seat Tube

The seat tube tapers from top to bottom. At the top it fits a slim 27.2mm seatpost that offers some flex and therefore increases comfort especially when riding over rough ground. At the bottom the large diameter nicley flows into the bottom bracket shell and downtube to provide great stiffness and drivetrain efficiency.

Hydroforming

Using water or oil pressure aluminium tubes are transformed from their original round shape into their ideal shape determined by STEVENS engineers to perfectly withstand any load without any weight penalty. Riders of allround bikes and pedelecs will benefit from a better stability caused by hydroforming even when they are touring with heavy luggage.

Tapered Steerer / Tapered Headtube

Fork shaft (or steerer tube) and head tube are tapered, meaning their diameter increases from top to bottom resulting in a conical shape. The diameter needs to be bigger at the bottom since this is where higher stress is applied - especially when the bike has a higher total weight due to luggage or an e-drive and battery. Also tapered steerers feature a smoother force transfer (like forces caused by hard braking) to the downtube than forks with a continuous 1 1/8" diameter.

Triple Butted, Double Butted

Meaning a frame tube has three or two different wall thicknesses along its length. Triple butted (TB) is the usual technology with STEVENS high-quality frames.
Tubes with different wall thicknesses are optimally adjusted to certain ways of manufacturing or to withstand specific loads. Where the highest loads occur or where tubes are welded, walls are the thickest. Butted tubes allow frame weight to be lower by several hundred grams.

Adjustable Dropouts

High quality STEVENS frames equipped with a gear hub or Pinion 18-gear box come with adjustable dropouts. These make correct tensioning of the chain or drive belt very easy. Adjustment via headless set screw and Allen key allows very precise alignement. Two fastening bolts on each side provide tight grip. On bikes with derailleur shifting the chain is tensioned by the derailleur.
