The San Remo didn’t show any weakness which was typical for STEVENS road bikes, says RoadBIKE magazine (issue June 2017) in a test of entry-level bike for under 1,000 Euros. The report continues: ”The San Remo rides convincingly calm and secure.” In this price category it stands out as the ”perfect all-rounder.”
The rider would sit stretched-out and far less upright than with most other competitors. ”Despite its calm behaviour when going straight ahead it steers direct and precisely and also accelerates this way.” With these sporty characteristics it’s well recommended for ambitious beginners or road cyclists looking for a solid, reasonably-priced bike.
The specs were flawless. This verdict predominantly referred to the new Shimano Tiagra group. Shimano had it revamped for model year 2016 – and added lots of value according to RoadBIKE. It now boasts ten speeds enabling closer steps between and a wider range of gears. It even features an advantage over other group sets: The rear derailleur can handle a 34-tooth large sprocket, all the higher ranked groups have a maximum of 32. Combined with an also 34-tooth front chainring one could climb even really steep ascends with ease. A noticeable improvement was the brake-shift levers’ ergonomics.
Only the new brakes’ pressure point felt a little wobbly due to the brake pads being housed in plastic cartridges. And last but not least now all cables are hidden under bar tape.
In direct comparison the San Remo performed best in the test categories ”uphill”, ”downhill”, handling and wheels. The STEVENS’ Fulcrum Racing Sport wheels were the second lightest but also the stiffest in the test. And last but not least the San Remo is available in eight frame sizes from 44 to 60cm which allows most cyclists to find a frame that fits exactly just as it should be for serious sports equipment.
Conclusion: The strong all-rounder from Stevens scores with frequent riders and demanding bargain hunters. Good specs, many sizes.
The STEVENS San Remo is available in frame sizes 44, 47, 50, 52, 54, 56, 58 and 60cm for 999 Euros at certified STEVENS dealers.
