STEVENS cyclo-cross athletes score National Championship titles

Last weekend, while all was at a standstill in Germany due to the Coronavirus pandemic restrictions enforced by BDR (German Cyclists Federation), some of our neighboring countries went forth with their championship title events. Our STEVENS racers showed up in top form at these races, especially those held in Belgium, Switzerland and Italy where they earned three national championship titles.

While the German national championships has been postponed until October later this year, national events in neighboring countries - held under strict hygienic regulations - certainly provided for more than enough excitement. Helping to spice up the races were healthy servings of mud, slush, icy temperatures and frozen tracks.

Cant certainly Can – win, that is!

Belgium was again the highest profile event of them all, as this is the heartland of ‘cross. Kicking off the events held in Meulebeke was the women’s race where Sanne Cant (Iko-Crelan) dominated the field from start to finish, beating out track/road specialist Lotte Topecky by an impressive 22 seconds. Cant scored her 12th consecutive victory in the women’s elite category that day. This soft-spoken Belgian has been a force to be reckoned with in cyclocross for more than a decade. She is 3x World and European champion, as well as multi-time overall winner of the major series events such as World Cup and Superprestige.

Dream weekend for Italian Alice Maria Arzuffi

Things went similarly well for STEVENS rider Alice Maria Arzuffi (777 CX Team) in Lecce, which is located in Italy’s southern region of Apulia. She triumphantly broke the nine-year winning streak of Eva Lechner, who finished only third behind Chiara Teocchi. Road specialist Arzuffi could hardly believe her luck, writing excitedly on Instagram, "If it's a dream, please don't wake me up!"

Jan Christen wins Swiss U19 race – at 16 years old!

Another top performance goes to STEVENS junior rider Jan Christen. At the Switzerland U19 Cross Championships held in Hittnau, near Zurich, Christen scored a commanding victory, pulling away from the field early on in the race. He was followed respectively by Nils Aebersold and Finn Treudler. It was the biggest triumph so far for this sixteen-year-old Christen, who expertly navigated the exceptionally frozen terrain.

STEVENS sends a BIG CONGRATULATIONS to these three exceptional riders for their National Championship titles earned over the weekend. Hats off to you all!
