10th national title for Sören Nissen

By winning the Luxembourg Cross Country Marathon Championship, Sören Nissen was able to clinch his 10th national cross country title and at the same time punch his ticket to participate in the Cross Country Marathon World Championships.

The race was held in La Roche-en-Ardenne, Belgium, as part of the Belgian National Championships, which were held on the same day, ensuring a high-quality field of riders. The demanding 35 kilometres long course, most of which was ridden on single trails, had to be tackled three times and offered a total of 3500 metres of altitude.

From the beginning and in the first two hours of the race, Sören, a native Dane with a Luxembourg passport, set the pace and did not give the other Luxembourgish riders the slightest chance. Knowing that he was in a good position, Sören took it easy and concentrated on controlling the race from the front, avoiding mistakes and crashes. And so, after 4:52 hours, Sören would cross the finish line in 5th place overall, as fastest Luxembourg rider and the new Luxembourg Cross Country Marathon Champion .

"This year it felt so good to be back on top of the podium after all the problems with my injuries last autumn and the missed chance to defend my title. Now I can wear the red-white-blue jersey of the National Champion for another year as reigning National Champion in both Cross Country and Cross Country Marathon," said the overjoyed Sören right after the finish. And further: "This victory was already my 10th national off-road title that I could win over the years. That now makes eight titles in Luxembourg in XCO, XCM and CX as well as two Danish XCM titles."

With his title, Sören also secured his participation in the Cross Country Marathon World Championships, which will be held in Denmark in mid-September. "This year, the World Championships will take place in my "old" home country of Denmark, on some of the tracks I used to race as a kid. The race consists of 120 kilometres on an almost flat course with lots of single trails. It is not a typical XCM course and looks more like a cross country course. In any case, I will do my best and see what comes out in the end."
