As of this season the STEVENS P-Carpo Tour is equipped with the Pinion 1.18 gear box. With this huge gear selection and bandwidth it’s also a great alternative for longer trips. Because of that German Radtouren Magazine was keen on including the Carpo in a test of 10 ”Pinion bikes” for their March 2017 issue.
Despite the P-Carpo and its 25kg-capacity pannier rack actually not being made to transport heavy luggage for epic voyages – its legal gross vehicle weight (bike weight + rider weight + cargo) may not exceed 140kg/308lbs – it excelled in the road test: ”In terms of handling the Stevens was in the top group, it rolls along nicely stable on fat, smooth 29er tires and always keeps it calm even when shifting weight.”
The flawlessly crafted frame not only looked great but also provided a very stable ride. The gear box’s enormous power was very well transferred to the rear wheel by the fat chainstays.
The specs were remarkably well-chosen. ”Not only it’s the least expensive bike with a Pinion 1.18 gear box, it also features only top components where it counts.” Among others the authors listed front and rear lights from Busch+Müller and Big Apple tires from Schwalbe.
About the belt drive the editors said that it presented a good alternative for frequent riders since it required only little maintenance and lasted very long. Some testers found the handlebar a little too wide – but that can be fixed by a certified STEVENS dealer.
Conclusion: The Stevens P-Carpo is a superb travel cruiser and comfortable every-day companion - the value tip among Pinion 1.18 models.
