STEVENS S-Pedelecs up to 25 km/h

List of Replacement Parts and Guideline

Dear STEVENS partner,

a pedelec which supports the rider's pedaling power up to a speed of 25 km/h via an electric motor is a bicycle in legal terms. There are, however, some responsibilities attached with regard to the CE marking and the conformity assessment via the Product Safety Act and the Machinery Directive. A dealer (or consumer) will turn into manufacturer, if he or she replaces certain parts.

The guideline below for the exchange of parts of CE marked pedelecs drawn up by Zweirad-Industrie-Verband (ZIV; the Association of the Two-Wheel Industry), Verbund Service und Fahrrad (VSF, the Association Service and Bicycle) and Zedler-Institut is of no juridical status. Only after a verdict appealing to this guideline this would probably be the case. This state-of-the-art piece is a sensible help for your everyday work, however. Below we offer recommendations for the exchange of parts.
Basically parts may be replaced by original parts. Furthermore adjustments have to be made using common sense, must be technically safe and meet the current state of the art.

The guideline “Exchange of Parts on CE-marked Pedelecs” distinguishes five groups of parts:

Category 1

Category 1 comprises parts which must “only be exchanged after having been approved of by the manufacturer of the vehicle/the system provider.” This includes integral electronic drive components, e.g. motor, sensors, electronic control components as well as electronic conductors.

If you want to exchange a rechargeable battery, for example, please ask the manufacturer directly for support. For current STEVENS pedelecs, the dealers' customer service of Bosch eBike Systeme, www.bosch-ebike.com, Shimano, www.paul-lange.de, or Fazua, www.fazua.com, is your contact.

Category 2

Category 2 comprises parts which must “only be exchanged after having been approved of by the manufacturer of the vehicle.” This mainly includes bicycle parts such as frame, fork, brake systems or racks. Please contact our technical service in this case.

Category 3

Category 3 comprises parts which may be exchanged after having been approved of by the manufacturer of the vehicle or the respective parts. This includes, for example, front light, saddle and seat post, handlebars/stem unit or wheels. The guideline explicitly states to this that the parts manufacturer's approval can only be granted, if the respective part was sufficiently tested for its intended purpose according to the respective standards and if a risk analysis was conducted beforehand.

Notes to Handlebars/Stem Units of STEVENS Vertriebs GmbH:
Basically it is only allowed to exchange handlebars and stem at the same time. Handlebars and stems as well as their clearance are to be considered as a unit. Exempt from this are combinations of parts of different manufacturers. When using handlebars/stem units of other manufacturers, please mind their clearances. Furthermore you have to see to it that the new handlebars/stem unit does not have any negative impact on the riding characteristics and that it is intended for the respective field of application, e.g. only use handlebars/stem units intended for mountainbiking on mountainbike pedelecs and not trekking handlebars which are tilted backwards. This applies exclusively for wider handlebars and not for other adjustments, e.g. higher stems.

STEVENS Vertriebs GmbH urgently recommends using handlebars/stem units of the home brand E-Scorpo. These handlebars/stem units were successfully tested in interaction and cover a multitude of settings. It is allowed to adapt the lengths of shifter and brake cables, if this is necessary according to the list of replacement parts due to using wider handlebars of the E-Scorpo series.

We basically recommend handlebars/stem units with 31.8 mm diameter.

Notes to tires of STEVENS Vertriebs GmbH:
Only tires recommended by the respective manufacturer must be used. The recommendation may, e.g., be indicated by “E-BIKE-Ready 25” (Schwalbe) or “ECO” (Continental). Studded tires must not be used on City and Trekking pedelecs.

Notes to saddles of STEVENS Vertriebs GmbH:
For seat posts of STEVENS Vertriebs GmbH saddles with round wire rails of 7 mm diameter are allowed which must not be made of carbon or titanium.

Category 4

Category 4 comprises parts which do not require any specific approval, e.g. pedals, parts of the groupset, kickstand, grips or chain guards. Please find exemptions in the guideline below in the respective category. Basically also any adjustments of parts of this category have to be made responsibly and carefully. It has to be made sure that all parts work and interact safely and reliably.

Category 5

Category 5 comprises special notes for mounting accessories e. g. assembly of pannier bags, rear-view mirrors and bar-ends.

We would kindly like to draw your attention to the fact again that adjustments must be made responsibly, according to the intended use, standard-compliant, according to the current state of the art and carefully. If you are in doubt or have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact our technical service.
