Laurens Sweeck takes over World Cup lead

With a second place at the UCI Cyclocross World Cup in Hulst, the Netherlands, Laurens Sweeck (Crelan-Fristads) took over the World Cup lead for the first time ever in his career.

With two wins so far this season and consistently good results, Laurens is now four points ahead of his main rival Eli Iserbyt, who has won the first three races of the current season.

Laurens, who is currently also the overall leader in the Superprestige series, was part of a leading group of several riders from the beginning of the race. As the race progressed, it pulled the field wide apart, Sweeck went into the penultimate lap in third and was able to take over second place in the last lap behind Mathieu van der Poel, who would eventually also take home the win on home soil. Laurens, on his STEVENS Super Prestige cyclocross bike rolled across the finish line in second place and thus asa the new overall leader ahead of Eli Iserbyt.

After race seven in the Netherlands, the second half of the season starts next weekend in Antwerp, Belgium, which will see races in Ireland, Italy, Spain and France, among others.
